Do you ever feel like the gap between who you are and who you want to be is too big to cross? Do your actions fall short of your beliefs? (For example, do you have a vision of how your kids deserve to be treated but find yourself falling short of your vision?)

You are not alone.

I have felt that more often than I wish. I have felt the disappointment, the anguish, and the humility it can bring. But you know what I think? I’d rather feel that disappointment, anguish and humility than to live without the vision of who I want to be. Because as soon as we get complacent, the options for our future decrease.

And, actually, I think if we use the setbacks the right way, they are just part of a successful life journey! Notice, of course, the phrase the right way. By noticing the gap, becoming clear about the discrepancy, and then choosing to act, we can use the setbacks for improvement.

But there can be a pull that leads us a different way – the pull that adds shame and hopelessness to the equation. These might just lead to giving up. And that certainly won’t get us to where we want to be.

Giving up, hopelessness, and complacency will never help us bridge that gap.

So how do we bridge that gap?

We keep trying.

We get really good at implementing intentional habits.

We learn to understand our bodies and how our wellness affects everyone around us.

We make sure we are getting what we need for the express purpose of bringing our best selves to our sphere of influence and making the difference we’re intended to make in our homes and in our communities.

We live principles of wellness and we apply those principles of wellness by using the tools of wellness.

One small shift at a time.

And when we fall short? We give ourselves grace, pick ourselves up, keep an eye on our destination, and march on.
